True grass / Poaceae

Scientific name: Poaceae

Common name (English / Spanish / Catalan): True grass / Gramíneas / Gramínies

Annual or perennial herbs, commonly named grasses, from a few cm high and with tender stems to up to more than 2 meters high and with hard stem with the shape of canes. Leaves are very long and narrow, like ribbons, whose basal part surrounds the stem.
Small and little flowers, showing an exclusive organization by the family and grouped in spike-like inflorescences. Fruit (grain) arranged around the inflorescence, very small in natural species and somehow bigger in the cultivated ones (cereals, such as rice, wheat, barley …),.
Blooming from March to September.
