What is it?

Planttes is part of the citizen science project “Urban flora and allergy, do you cooperate?” that aims to inform about the presence of allergenic plants in the environment and the level of allergy risk depending on their phenological status. The objective is to help to understand better the relationship between the environment and allergic diseases, contributing to improve the quality of life of the people who suffer them.

In Citizen Science projects, the society participates actively and is a fundamental part of research.

Planttes and “Urban flora and allergy, do you cooperate?” improve the information generated by the Point of Information of Aerobiology (PIA-UAB) and the Unit of Biological Air Quality (UCBA-UGR) because they detail the risk of allergy at street level. Participating helps to better understand the relationship between the environment and allergic diseases and to improve the quality of life of the people affected.

“Urban flora and allergy, do you cooperate?” is integrated in the Citizen Science Office of the Barcelona City Council and collaborates with the Observatorio de Ciencia Ciudadana de España.

How?

With Planttes, the citizen can contribute to elaborate a map of the phenological state (presence of closed flower, of open flower and/or fruit) of the plants in the surroundings that cause allergy. To know the state of the plants allows to interpret whether it is in phase of pollen emission to the enviroment and, therefore, if it may be causing allergy to those people who are sensitive.

You can participate individually or through projects in schools, institutes, civic centers… Contact us.

Who promotes it?

The Point of Information of Aerobiology (PIA) of the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology (ICTA-UAB) and the Department of Animal Biology, Plant Biology and Ecology (BABVE) from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) and the Unit of Biological Air Quality (UCBA-UGR) of Department of Botany from the University of Granada (UGR).
