Evergreen tree, with a straight unbranched trunk often covered by the remaining part of the old leaves. Leaves large or very large , 1 to 6 m long, lanceolate or fan-shaped, dark green, and divided into leaflets (portions of leaves). They often have thorns on the petiole (lower part) of the leaf.
Flowers small, beige-yellow, grouped in large hanging inflorescences 30 to 90 cm long. Fruit (date) from yellow to reddish brown.
It blooms along the year (depending on the species).
